Situated on Crag’s view farm in Port Edward, this is the only official wildlife rehabilitation centre in the lower South Coast region of KwaZulu Natal. It was started by Craig Hosken and Ina de Koker.
Once healed, animals are released into safe areas where they may be conserved.
The course itself, designed by Peter Matkovich and Dale Hayes, is sculptured around one of the last remaining wetland forests on the South Coast of Kwa-Zulu Natal. It was designed to avoid areas of sensitive vegetation and utilizes the indigenous plants and shrubs in the natural features of the course. The club house has just been freshly renovated and is recognized as one of the most attractive in South Africa with spectacular views from the spacious terraces surrounding it.
The Port Edward lighthouse was established in 1968 and rebuilt in 1999. As an operational lighthouse it is a vital part of the lighthouse network with two beams. The light is half a million candlewatts in power and is visible for 40km.
As of mid-2012, the Port Edward Lighthouse is no longer open to the public. Previously, the Ships Galley Coffee Shop served light meals, cakes and refreshments but is now no longer open to the public.
Just north of Port Edward on the beautiful South Coast of KwaZulu-Natal is the idyllic Trafalgar Beach. It remains quiet, tranquil and absolutely stunning to see. And, what’s more, it is a Blue Flag beach, which means that it meets a number of strict criteria regarding its safety, cleanness, amenities, ecological value, and educational potential. Being awarded Blue Flag status sets Trafalgar leagues ahead as a really fabulous beach.
Home to a challenging 18-hole championship golf course that stretches along the expansive Wild Coast in the Eastern Cape, the Wild Coast Sun Country Club forms part of the South African PGA circuit. With its par-70 card rating, the course boasts magnificent ocean views and magnificently curated fairways and greens.
For the adventurous hiker and trail walker visiting the Umtamvuna Nature Reserve which is 8km from Port Edward on the South Coast of KwaZulu Natal offers a number of trails with varying difficulty and distances to explore.
The three magnificent trails include the Kingfisher Trail – 30 minutes, the Loerie Trail – 2 hours and the Fish Eagle Trail a 4 hour circular route which provide hikers the opportunity to discover the amazing array of birdlife including some rare bird species and the breathtaking views of this diverse reserve.
